Your change of address checklist for Australia.

Work through this list in the week or two before you move and tick each item off as you go. The groups below cover the main areas: government and ID, money, utilities and home, and the everyday services that are easy to forget. Do most of it online and it takes an afternoon, not a week.

Tip: set up the Australia Post mail redirect first. It is your safety net. A redirect forwards anything you forget to update straight to your new address, so if you miss someone on this list, their mail still reaches you rather than the new occupant. It is a paid service, offered in 1, 3, 6 or 12-month terms. Arrange it a few days before you move so it is active from day one.

Government and ID

These are the ones that cause real headaches if they slip, so do them early.

• Australia Post mail redirect: set this up first as your safety net for anything you miss. It is paid, in 1, 3, 6 or 12-month terms.
• Medicare: update your address through your Medicare online account or the Express Plus app.
• ATO: update your details so your tax correspondence and notices reach you.
• Electoral roll (AEC): you are required to update your enrolment within 8 weeks of moving.
• Service NSW: update your driver licence and vehicle registration address.
• Toll accounts: update Linkt or E-Toll separately, as a rego address change does not update your toll tag.
• Centrelink: if you receive any payment, update your address to keep it flowing.

Money

Financial statements and cards carry sensitive detail, so you do not want them landing at your old place.

• Banks: update every account, including any you rarely use.
• Credit cards: update each card provider so statements and replacement cards arrive.
• Super fund: update your address so member statements and notices reach you.
• Insurers: tell your car, home, contents, health and life insurers. Your home and contents address change can also affect your policy, so do not skip it.
• CTP green slip insurer: update your address with your CTP insurer as well, not just the rego.

Utilities and home

Sort these so services are connected at the new place and disconnected at the old one, and you are not paying for both.

• Electricity: arrange connection at the new address and final read at the old one.
• Gas: connect and disconnect, and book any required meter appointments early.
• Internet and phone: book the transfer well ahead, as new connections can take time.
• Water: update the account, or confirm with your agent or landlord if you rent.

Everyday services

None of these are urgent on their own, but together they are the ones people forget until something goes missing.

• Employer: update your address for payroll, super and any mailed documents.
• GP and dentist: update your records, or register with a new practice near your home.
• Pets: update the microchip registry, your NSW Pet Registry or council details, and your vet. Our moving with pets guide covers the lot.
• Schools: notify current and new schools, and sort enrolment paperwork if you are changing.
• Subscriptions and deliveries: update anything posted to you, from magazines to meal kits and online-shopping default addresses.
• Gym and memberships: update or transfer, and check whether a closer branch suits you.
